MasterKanji — Terms of use terms-2026-11-02-v11 · 2 November 2026 Who operates MasterKanji? MasterKanji is operated by Dean Tearse, a sole trader trading as MasterKanji. Write to Dean Tearse, 5 Brayford Square, London, E1 0SG, United Kingdom for business correspondence, complaints or cancellation. Email support@masterkanji.com (mailto:support@masterkanji.com). Using MasterKanji These terms explain how you can use MasterKanji and what to expect from your membership. Contact support@masterkanji.com (mailto:support@masterkanji.com) for account help, complaints, cancellation or privacy questions. Your learning journey MasterKanji provides English-language self-study lessons, scheduled reviews, a personal study record and an illustrated story across 60 levels. The first three levels are free, with no payment card or automatic conversion to a paid plan. Progression follows learning prerequisites; payment does not skip them. Results depend on your practice and are not a guarantee of fluency, examination success or a qualification. Pronunciation playback uses your device’s speech service, rather than native-speaker recordings. Accounts and younger learners You must be at least 13 years old to create or use a MasterKanji account. By accepting these Terms at signup, you declare that you meet this minimum age. Public kana charts and account-free practice do not require an account. If you need a parent or guardian’s agreement under the law where you live, involve them before registering or purchasing. Only an adult authorised to use the payment method should make a purchase. A card payment or acceptance checkbox does not itself verify age, parental responsibility or permission to publish a child’s information. We can restrict and remove accounts found to belong to children under 13. Do not create an account for someone else without the necessary authority. Your username identifies your community posts. Keep your password and API key private. You are responsible for activity you authorise; tell support promptly if you believe someone has accessed your account. Plans, prices and payment Monthly membership costs £4.99 per month or $6.49 per month. Annual membership costs £39.99 per year or $51.99 per year. Lifetime membership costs £99.99 or $129.99 once. These GBP and USD prices include applicable tax. Monthly and annual plans automatically renew at the stated interval and price unless cancelled. Annual billing is one yearly payment. There are no delivery charges or compulsory paid extras. Choose your currency, plan and actual billing country before continuing to Stripe’s hosted checkout. You can correct your selection or leave before paying. Stripe may offer optional conversion to a local currency; review its currency, rate and final total before confirming payment. Paid membership is available only in the supported billing countries listed at checkout. Do not use an inaccurate address to bypass eligibility checks. Purchases use Stripe Managed Payments, with Sold through Link as merchant of record. Its checkout identifies the transaction merchant and presents the applicable buyer terms. Stripe/Link handles payment processing, tax within its supported coverage, transaction receipts and transaction-level support. MasterKanji provides the learning service and product support. You can also use Link (https://app.link.com) for transaction help. A return to a success page alone does not confirm payment: access follows verified payment status. Personal flashcards Free accounts can keep one personal deck; active paid accounts can keep up to 30. Card and import limits are shown in the tools. Flashcards are text-only; decks containing images, audio or other media are not supported. Only upload content you have permission to use. Supported Anki imports are described in the import screen; custom add-on behaviour is not executed. After paid access expires, you have 30 days to export your decks and select one to retain. Extra decks are locked during this period. Confirming a selection permanently deletes the other personal decks, cards and review history. If you do not select one, we retain your most recently studied deck (or your oldest if none has been studied) and delete the others after the deadline. Renewing before deletion retains the decks; renewing afterwards does not restore them. This concerns personal flashcards, not kanji-course progress. Access, renewal and lifetime membership Paid membership opens later lessons as you progress and enables your personal study API. Lifetime membership is a one-off purchase with the service-lifetime access and three-year closure protection explained below. Ordinary cancellation of a monthly or annual subscription stops future renewal and keeps access until the paid-through date. After paid access expires, lessons, scheduled reviews and practice are limited to the first three free levels; paid-level study and personal API access require an active membership. Your progress, notes, review history and earned story chapters remain saved. Subscribing again restores eligible paid study without starting over. Paid-item review appointments pause while access is unavailable; the first three levels remain available. Cancelling does not reset your course level. A full refund or payment reversal removes the corresponding paid entitlement. Deleting an account removes its learning data and access, including lifetime access, and is separate from requesting a refund. See the cancellation and refund policy (/refunds) before deleting an account. Manage renewal through Billing or the linked customer portal. If you cannot sign in, email support. Failed payments can suspend paid access; restoring a valid payment restores the eligible membership. Changing a billing address to an unsupported country can stop renewal or lead to cancellation and refund. We do not offer automatic credit or proration for a plan switch. Manage or end an existing subscription before buying another; contact support about a change rather than risking duplicate charges. Lifetime access and closure protection Lifetime means access for as long as the MasterKanji service operates, with no recurring payment or scheduled membership expiry. It does not promise that the service will operate for your entire life. Your membership does not expire at the end of three years, and we will not introduce renewal charges to an existing lifetime purchase. If we permanently close the core paid learning service within three years of your lifetime purchase, we will provide a proportionate refund for the unused part of that three-year period. The period starts when your purchase is confirmed and ends on its third anniversary. We calculate the refund from the amount you actually paid, including tax, multiplied by the days remaining in that period divided by its total days, rounded to the nearest minor currency unit and allowing for any refund already received for that purchase. After the three-year period, this additional closure-refund guarantee ends. Closure after that point does not itself create a refund under this guarantee, but all applicable statutory rights and other mandatory remedies remain. We will give reasonable advance notice of a planned closure where possible and explain how to request the refund. Contact support@masterkanji.com (mailto:support@masterkanji.com) with your purchase reference; no particular wording is required. Cancellation and consumer rights Our cancellation and refund policy (/refunds) explains how to cancel, request a refund and use the cancellation form. We do not require you to waive a statutory cooling-off right as a condition of using MasterKanji. Immediate access does not by itself remove that right. Mandatory rights concerning faulty, missing or misdescribed content or services remain available, and Stripe/Link’s applicable buyer protections also apply. Your personal API Eligible paid and lifetime accounts may hold one active personal API key. It is for your own account, progress and current study integrations. Replace or revoke it in Settings. Do not use the hosted API to scrape a bulk curriculum, access another person’s account, resell access or operate a competing service from our infrastructure. Rate limits and learning prerequisites apply. Separate open-data licences still govern reusable dictionary and example material. Community and acceptable use The community is publicly readable and may be indexed or copied by search engines. Accounts are required to participate. Follow the community guidelines (/community-guidelines): no harassment, hate, sexual exploitation, threats, scams, spam, unlawful material or disclosure of private information. Do not post children’s identifying or contact details. You retain rights in your posts and give us permission to display and moderate them to operate the community. This is not permission for unrelated advertising. Report harmful content using a topic’s reporting control or email support, including the link and a brief explanation. Support also accepts complaints about moderation and access restrictions. We may hide content, close discussions or restrict accounts to address harm, abuse, security threats or legal duties. We will explain the reason where possible, allow a review through support and treat paid access and any required refund fairly. We do not promise uninterrupted access or use arbitrary account closure to avoid paid commitments. Content, changes and responsibility See Content & credits (/credits) for dictionary, example and font licences. Keep attribution and other applicable licence conditions when reusing licensed material. Other people’s intellectual property and privacy rights must be respected. We may improve content, correct errors and update security. Material changes to these terms or a future renewal price will be communicated in advance; we will not silently change an already paid period. You may stop future renewal if you disagree. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including fraud, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or your mandatory consumer remedies. The law of England and Wales governs these terms, subject to mandatory protections and court rights where you live. This does not force a consumer to bring a claim only in England.
